Question

I want to add a 12 foot wide carport/enclosed addition to the side of my existing garage with a ten foot tall door. My existing garage currently has ten foot side walls. There fore I need to start the roof of the addition approx half way up the existing roof which is I believe a 4/12 pitch. This makes the addition rafters span around 20 feet. What size of rafters would I need to use at two foot centers to support a 35 pound per square foot snow load which is code in minnesota? Can I also brace up the rafters from the bottom of the existing garage rafters in order to use a smaller rafter and still be up to code? Can send drawings and pics if needed. Thanks, Dean

Hi Dean;

Have a look at this drawing. This should work for the 35# snow load.

You can delete the corbeling if you use 2x8s

Corbeling @ exterior is into 6x6 posts @ 8' oc. Recessed 3/4" into post

Corbeling @ garage is @ 4' oc.

Of course your biggest concern would be the capacity of the existing roof system. If it is cut and stack it will need braceing at the upper point. Trusses would depend on the size of the top chord, and load points of the webbing.

You could also get fancy with a combo trussed gable/sloped roof system but this requires 30% more lumber and roofing material.
