Question

I have a 1950's-era Caloric ultramatic stove, model no. 9468W. There are six gas burners, and then there's a small oven and a warming area. There are no pilot lights. I recently noticed that when I light the oven, the flames seem to be spreading beyond their little ring area, and I can actually see them from the oven without bending down to look at the broiler. When I turn off the gas, these flames go away too, making me think that this might not be a grease fire but perhaps a gas leak.   I know of no one who services 50+-year-old stoves, and I really love this one. Can this wonderful stove be saved?

Hi, these older units and many of the new ones today use what is called a compression fitting where the gas supply lines meet the burners. With time these can become loose or in your case deteriorate and cause small gas leaks that will ignite where they are not supposed too! This can be repaired but I will warn you now most service shops will not want to deal with it due to liability issues and the fact most of the lines will have to be custom made because factory lines and fittings are not going to be available any longer.
