Question

My Tequita(Chihuahua) is 12 years old. He came in from being outside for just a couple minutes with swollen glands and limping about a month ago. I thought he may have been biten by some kind of insect. Since then , he's lost weight and is not as lively as before. I took him to the vet , he gave him a Covine(?) shot for infection and took a sample of one of the swollen glands. The result came back as unsure , but pretty positive it is cancer. They want to do a biopsy. He's not in good health with the weight loss , age , etc. Besides having a heart murmer. I don't know if he could handle the chemo , etc. I don't know what to do. Please help.. Thank you

Accepted Answer

If the tumors are lymphoma, then the treatment is fairly easy on them. The risk of having these swollen glands all over the body in places you would not dream there are lymph glands is so much higher than the risk of the chemotherapy.

I treat lymphoma all the time in sick dogs because they get so much relief when these glands go down in size.

Follow your vet's advice and if there are any problems, have the vet check the white blood cell count to see if it is low. That is the most common side effect that I see in my chemo protocol for lymphoma.
