Question

Over the last couple of days, my cat has had his tail down (wrapped against his bum or only part way up). His tail isn't up and bushy anymore. He seems less enthused with things but still ok. I'm away at work during the day and often for a couple nights at my boyfriend's on the weekends but I make sure to groom/cuddle and talk to my cat, and have playtime with him when I'm home. Thought he was just down, so was even considering getting him a buddy? Ruled out constipation; he's going to the potty fine. Then I thought it may be worms so I checked a sample of his waste and it looked healthy. The final thing that I think it might be, is a psychological thing. He's very scared of flies when they're in the house or outside. He runs away and hides. I notice lately he's tip-toeing around and even touching things on the floor to make sure it's nothing and is really jumpy. Could it be his phobia that's causing him to be so stressed and if so, how can I help him overcome it? Any ideas?

Does your cat go outside at all?

Does he seem unable to raise the tail at all?

Have you checked under the tail for any sores or mats?

Do his eyes look normal?

He does go outside into the garden (small enclosed yard) almost every day. I have checked his bum and it looks okay, although yes, he does have some matting I need to finish cutting out by his bum (he has long hair). Whenever I raise his tail, he flops it right back down but he does have it up maybe half way sometimes. He kind of curves it down and to the side but the tip still curves up. I had checked his eyes. They look normal.

Accepted Answer

It is posssible he got some damage to the tail such as a pull on it that has hurt the nerves in the tail though a painful mat might also make him keep it down. You can see if trimming the mat resolves the problem (just be careful when you trim as cat skin cuts as easy as butter with a hot knife).

If he is fearful of buzzing insects (usually learned when a cat gets stung) he may have had one show up unexpectedly when he was walking by it such as a fly or bee on the floor that suddenly took off buzzing as the cat approached. That might make him look closely at objects on the ground.

It could be he hurt himself in a reaction to an insect that scared him too and that is impacting how he holds his tail.
As he goes out there is potential for intestinal parasites. What the vet looks for in the stool is microscopic eggs and oocysts as its rare you see a worm in the stool.

Stress can make the tail be dropped, illness, or injury so I'd suggest a vet check up again. The vet can compare this exam to the last one and may be able to find an injury or problem that can be resolved to help your cat feel better.

Hope this helps you!

So, just so you know what the deal was with my cat; I suspected maybe his food wasn't agreeing with him (ie was constipation or digestion issue). I buy two types of the same brand of wet food for him. I found when I gave him the "stew" type food occasionally, as opposed to the minced food, he would have his tail down for a day or two following. I compared labels and it looks like there is more soy content in the chunky food. I read that cats sometimes can't process soy very well. I eliminated that food and he has been fine ever since. Very energetic and playful. :)

Answer

Thanks for the update - as you never mentioned food I'd never have suspected it!

Pretty much cats process meat or fish proteins the best as their digestive tracts are very short. Soy can cause gas which may have been botherng him!
