Question

my mum just bought me 2 magpie guiena pigs, a male and a female. the female is having babies an we have noticed the male is chewing on the cage. we were wondering if he is lacking in something. i feed them guinea pig mix, carrots an apple. oh and nutri-puffs.

Hi,
Congrats on the upciming litter! The male is likely chewing as a result of teeth growth. Guinea pigs need to chew in order to wear these down. The following link has some suggestions for products you can offer: http://www.spca.bc.ca/animalcare/guineapigcare.asp Additionally, chewing can indicate bordom and your boy may need some more interaction, larger living space etc.

Once the babies are born, you'll need to consider sepearting the male and female for a bit to avoid a back to back breedings as well as for the safety of babies. Many owners consider neutering their males to avoid this. I hope he's doing better with the chewing soon.
