Question

I am a Schizophrenia patient for 10 years. Recently, I take my courage to expand my social circle. I get to know a special guy and we both show interest on each other. I read a book said that when we are in good mood or in love, our brain will release serotonin and other chemicals, are these chemicals good for mental patient like us ? Is it because of lack of these chemicals that caused our onset of mental illness or chemical imbalance ?

Answer

Hi,
I am glad you are staying educated about this disorder and want to learn how to keep yourself healthy.

The cause of schizophrenia is constantly being researched. Currently the research suggests that this disorder is a genetic issue along with psychosocial or environmental problems. If there is a family member with this disorder, likelihood of offspring is about 10 times greater than other populations which suggests genetic. On the other hand, studies with twins raised in different environment where one developes schizophrenia and one does not would suggest more of an environemntal or social issue. This means it depends upon the amount and types of stresses the person experiences over time.
There is some research currently making an attempt to isolate the genes that may be involved.
For several years it has been thought that persons with schizophrenia have greater levels of the chemical dopamine in the brain, although it is unclear whether this is the cause or the result. There has also been some investigation into the serotonin levels as well with no proven outcome.

Serotonin is one of the feel good chemicals in the brain, and yes when you are with someone you like or love, this chemicals are enhanced, particularly with sexual activity. This is also one of the chemicals that is addressed when people take an anti depressant.

It is very healthy for you to widen your social circle and become more outgoing, and date. This is a very positive, and wonderful step for you two. The impact of the relationship should be positive for your mental health, and help you feel good naturally through social interaction, activities, and bonding/love with another person.

I am so proud you have empowered yourself and taken a chance! This can be very difficult for a multitude of people. It is always great to hear when people don't allow their mental issues to define what life is about, but to take a chance and live to the fullest.

As long as you continue taking your medications, this relationship should be a healthy path for you.

Hope this helps. Gina

As I have taken medication for 10 years, and there is no relapse shown for the last 5 years, my psychiatrist has lowered down my dosage from 2mg Risperidone to 1.5 mg. After a year, he will adjust my dosage and now is at 1mg already. He said I may become the 20% of lucky mental patients whom can recover completely, that means can let go of medication eventually. Do you think by having a healthy relationship, work life balance and live a healthy way can accomplish this state ?

Wow, that's impressive! You are definitely doing great!
I honestly don't know the answer to that, but if you are diligent in following your physician's directives, and if he/she takes you off the medications, just be consciously aware of any signs or symptoms that you may be digressing. It really sounds as if you are working hard.

I personally have seen people with this diagnosis progress to taking no medications and living a full, unhindered life, so keep doing whatever it is you are doing. It sounds as if you are on the right track. :) Gina
