Question

Hello. I am 21 and recently in the last 3 months I started hanging out with a female who was 16 when i met her but just turned 17 in august. Two weeks ago, this female called me over to her parents house and she invited me into her house to watch a movie. I went in and i fell asleep on the floor of her bedroom. She and I are just friends, no inappropriate behavior. I was awoken the next morning by her parents who were very upset. When asked questions I regretably lied and told her parents i was only 18 and several other lies to keep me out of trouble. I feel terrible for lying and they have since found out the truth and have been threatening me to press charges. What charges could the parents have against me? I have been told by a local police man that the legal age of an adult in GA is 17...i appreciate your help in this matter. please respond as soon as possible

Answer:

It appears that the age of consent in Georgia is actually 16 pusuant to Georgia Criminal Codes 16.6.3, 16.6.4, and 16.6.5.

You can view these codes at the following link:
http://www.lexis-nexis.com/hottopics/gacode/default.asp

Regardless of the age factor, falling asleep on someone's floor when invited there as a guest is not a crime, nor is lying to a parent about one's own age. If nothing illegal took place, no charges should be levied.

If they make false allegations, you may have grounds to file suit against them for defamation. If the police, the parents, or anyone else contacts you further regarding the matter, you would be prudent to retain a licensed Georgia attorney to deal with the matter for you.

My policy on such matters is:
Don't worry until there's something to worry about. If something somehow does come up, retain an attorney to deal with the matter properly for you.
