Question

I own a Grand Prix GTP supercharged 2001. Lately the TCS is turning off and the car seems to buck softly. Stop and go creates a deep butt subtle thump in the front end and I have noticed power loss when driving at faster speeds. Any ideas?

Welcome. Is the check engine light on as well?

yes and has been for awhile. When dealership tech looked it was coding that the coolant experienced too LOW a temp... and this is in AZ!

Answer

Ok, that code would have been a P0128. This simply means the engine temp does not reach a calibrated reading in a set period of time. Replace the thermostat as it is easy and cheap. IT should take care of the code which may easily be causing the TCS system fault.

But the problem is maybe more than that... sometimes when braking and turning the front end kind of shatters. I do feel physical thuds when start stop. and also, every once in a while, tachometer goes to zero and TCS disengages while just driving along. when traveling on. HWY and suddenly hitting brakes, front end shudders.

Answer

Ok a shudder when braking is almost always a warped rotor. As for a noise such as the thumping I would check closely the axle shaft and CV joints. YOu may be having one fail. Check that the boots are not leaking grease.

Estimated cost to fix those you stated... worst case scenario?

Accepted Answer

An axle shaft can be 400-500, rotors are usually only 100 or so depending on the brand of parts. Worst case is something in the transmission, but I really doubt that.

Another cause of thumping is the steering shaft lubrication issue but this usually happens when braking with the steering wheel turned a bit.
