Question

Hi, I hope you can help. We have been trying for a baby. My period is not due until 5 days time, but has arrived now. When it started (light brown) yesterday I did some research and thought it may be 'implantation bleeding'. But today it has turned in to a usual period (fairly heavy with cramps) and I am never usually early. What could it be?

Thanks in advance

Hello,

Welcome to Just Answer and thanks for your question. One common reason for a period coming early or late is stress. Others are reproductive hormone fluctuations, pituitary or thyroid gland problems, illness, infections, etc.

Is this an automated service? I asked a very specific, pregnancy-related question and got a cover-all, general answer about periods that I could have looked up in a basic reference book....

Answer

No, it's not automated service. There is no way to say what (if anything) specifically is wrong without an examination. The most likely reason your period is early is the anxiety and stress of trying to conceive.

Could you tell me what kind of examinations would be standard practice in this situation and what a practictioner would be hoping to ascertain through those examinations?

So do you believe that this is a period and not a sign of a (very) early miscarriage? From my limited internet research, this seems to have been a fairly common question (although lacking in answers unfortunately). If it is tied to implantation bleeding (which is what I first thought was happening) could the heavier bleeding be indicative of a problem with this implantation?

Many thanks

A practitioner would be doing blood tests to see if you had been pregnant, perhaps an ultrasound to make certain that the uterus is truly empty at this point. Implantation bleeding is usually just spotting and really has no potential to cause a full period. A fertilized egg is smaller than the head of a pin and is unable to do that much damage to the endometrium.

It is true that many pregnancies end in early miscarriage, and a failed implantation this early would be no more than a regular period. Most women do not even realize they have been pregnant.
