Question

Last winter I took my 2001 Sable to one of the local ford dealer ships to have 100K “tune-up” preformed. Interestingly enough the car was not running badly at the time. Total hit for that little endeavor , plugs, filters, fluid changes PVC & hose with Trans service, about 850bux. Two days later the SES light comes on and I have a rough cold idle. I can tell you was not happy. Fast forward to now: I just went up to my local parts store house, used there scanner (I know 9 months later) plugged it in and found I had a code P1131. I have been looking around at the various site and most everyone is saying Vacuum leak post MAF. I just looking for input here. Side note, I had a scanner I picked up from Amazon.com that I sent back because I found out after the fact that the next one up could read O2 cross count… It was like 145bux still think I would like to have one does anyone have suggests on that too.

Answer

Hello! Welcome to justanswer!

Do you have any vacuum leaks? If you dont then I would suspect a bad Airflow sensor. Have a shop do a "smoke test" on your intake manifold. If the results are negative then the Airflow sensor is your problem. If leaks are found then thats the problem.

What would you say the probability is that the intake manifold was damaged by the dealership tech when it was remove to replace the plugs on the rear bank?

Answer

You dont need to remove the intake manifold to do the plugs. Do you think that they did?

I don't know, my understanding was the upper part the manifold had to be pulled to get the plugs on the rear bank. Are you saying that isn’t true?

Accepted Answer

Correct. I never had to remove the intake manifold to do plugs in a 3.0 DOHC Sable. But if they did then theres a chance that the rear manifold is leaking at the upper and lower intake. Like I said earlier, a 1 hour smoke test will tell for sure. IF the smoke test is inconclusive then go with an Airflow sensor.
