Question

We just got a new kitten and now my 2 older cats do not meow. When they try it sounds like they have laryngitis. We did just lose our dog 2 weeks ago after having her for 12 years. Not sure if that would have anything to do with it.

Thanks, Stephanie

Answer

Thanks for the question XXXXXXXXXXXX.

In direct answer to your question : This is most likely to be some form of minor throat / laryngitis type infection which your two older cats have caught from the new kitten which would not necessarily be showing symptoms. This situation is not likely to be related to the loss of your dog.

While I cannot diagnose this for you over the internet I can tell you that I have had many consultations over the last twenty eight years concerning cats which had lost their voices. Only a tiny percentage of them turned out to be anything sinister, the majority I put down to some kind of minor throat infection although very often symptoms were not present other than the loss of voice.

Provided your cats are otherwise bright alert and eating then I would wait a few days and see how it goes, in most cases the meow will return without any treatment. The ones that were presented to me at my clinic were usually treated with antibiotics and as I say most them eventually responded.

You should consult your vet if any more symptoms appear or one of your cats deteriorates in any way.

If I have not covered your question fully enough or you would like to ask more I will be online for the next hour or so and I will be at your disposal.

My now middle cat is throwing up, which I thought was just hairballs, but could it be from the throat. He is usually a very talkitive cat.

My oldest cat seems to be sleeping alot more and eating alot more. Again, if he is also usually talkative, but nothing is coming out. This had been going on for about a week.

Thanks for the new information ...

The throwing up, the lethargy and the loss of voice could well be related to some disease caught from the kitten. While this is likely to be a minor condition it has been going on for a week so my advice would be to have your vet check your cats over. It could be that a course of antibiotics will put them right.

Regards,

Scott
