Question

We have a male cat, 1 1/2 years old....was just recently at the Vet for shots and a check-up.
Today he has been acting very strange.....sort of freaking out at times and shaking his ears......not eating well......this came on suddenly....we thought maybe had been bitten cause he acts like something itches.....and wants to be scratched......but then he started with the ear twitching.....what do you think ?

Info Request

I will try to help you with this, but first let me ask a couple of questions:

  • What day were his vaccines given?
  • Do you think he is running a fever?
  • still urinating and defecating normally?
  • Is he on flea control? If so, when did you put the last dose on and what did you use? If not, does he have fleas?
  • Any exposure to any toxins or house plants that he might have eaten?
  • Is there dark "gunk" in his ears?
  • Is he indoor/outdoor or indoor only?

Let me know and I will continue to advise you.

Hi...thanks for answering.....His vaccines were done around 9/3......no he is not on flea
control.....Dr. said it wasn't necessary as he is strictly an indoor cat and is not around other animals right now......we have never seen evidence of fleas.....
..only plants we have are not where he can access and all toxic items are behind closed doors.
How do you tell if he is running a fever.?
No , we don't think he has been using the litter box as much as normal but he also hasn't been eating as much today either.
Dose that help ?

It does help quite a bit....rules out a lot of the things that might have been more serious. I agree with you that it is very possible he could have been bitten by an insect. Cats are very curious, and many indoor cats are voracious bug hunters!

The only way to take his temperature is to use a digital thermometer rectally. Normal range is 100-102.5.

This is too far down the road to be a vaccine reaction, so I wouldn't worry about that. What I would try is giving his some antihistamine to see if he improves....if it is a bug bite, he should...if he doesn't improve, I would not hesitate to take him in tomorrow for an exam. It is possible he could have an ear infection or a tiny foreign body down in his ear that can be seen with an otoscope.

For tonight you could give either benadryl or zyrtec...which one do you have on hand (if either) and how much does he weigh...if you are comfortable giving him a pill, I can advise you on dosage.

Thank you again.
We do have Benedryl on hand (25mg capsules) and Buzz weighs 12 lbs.
We'll wait for your answer.....thanks

Oh, capsules are tough! He would take 12 mg....which if you had tablets would be simple, but capsules are a bit tougher to divide the contents easily. If you have a convenience store near by I would go get tablets....then he would take half of a 25 mg tablet every 8 hours.

Hope that helps....and hope this odd episode passes on its own. You sound like very attentive and concerned owners!

Best wishes!
