Question
I have a 1995 Hornet by Damon. I am having problems with the Generator. It is a Generac 36G II Plus. I just finished repairing a short in the system. I had the generator partially removed, the generator was tilted for about 2 hours. Once I got the generator back together and started the generator started to burn oil, I shut the generator down and let it sit about 24 hours went back and started it up again and this time it did not burn oil until I put a load on it (started the air conditioner). can you tell tell me what is going on?

Answer

Hello,

This is why an engine should never be tilted unless the oil has drained out.

What happened is that as it was tilted, some of the oil got up into the cylinders, and very probably into the heads.

It also could have gotten into the crankcase breather.

If it has gotten into the breather, the only 2 options are:

A. Run the set and let itself clear out (could take quite a while).

B. Remove the sheetmetal from around the engine (most likely will require removing the set), and clean out the breather element.

How long could it take. Will I have to replace the spark plug?
Accepted Answer

OOPS, almost forgot....

Remove the air cleaner and make sure it has not gotten saturated with oil. If it has, replace it - do not try to clean it. If there is oil in the air filter, spray a little carb cleaner into the carb while it is running to help wash the oil out of fthe carb throat.

After it has cleared up, it may not be a bad idea to change the plug if there is any age on it at all. At a minimum, remove and clean it.

If the breather is saturated, it could take a few hours to burn off enough oil to make it not smoke. The breather is actually supposed to be removed and cleaned periodically, but it is such a pain that very few people ever do it.

Wonderful!!!!

I was being cautious when I said it COULD take a few hours - it depended on where the oil was at and how much there was. If it cleared up in 10 minutes, it was most likely just a little bit in the cylinder. Make sure you check/clean/replace the spark plug to ensure the most efficient cumbustion possible.

Pleae remember to come back to Just Answer any time you have an issue.
