Question

we have just ound our gerbil lying in the cage lifeless, panting and freezing cold.although he has been active he has refused traets over the last 2-3 days. his brother however is well, eating and drinking and appears concerned.we have taken the ill gerbil out and warmed him back up, and he has taken water.although very quiet he looks pretty healthy,no nose or mouth problems, his coat is fine, although his eyes are only half open and he is reluctant to move. he appears to drag his back leg temporarily but does'nt appear hurt in any way. we think he may have had a stroke.what should we do,or give him

Hello,

Your gerbil is a senior citizen and this very well may be a stroke. If this is the case he may or may not recovery fully. The key now is to be sure he is taking fluids and able to eat. You can try using plain Pedialyte instead of water as this will replace the electrolytes in the body. You may need to grind the food and dilute it to syringe feed it. I suggest Oxbow critical care for herbivores. Keep him as quiet as possible and make sure his temperture is staying steady. Joan
