Question

I have developed palpitations and what feels like an irregular heart beat.   I am not breathless and feel fit - can hike etc. but it is really frightening me. I have had two echocardiograms but thecardiologists have not told me why my heart has suddenly become irregular and what I can do about it. Should I take more exercise. Please help me. I am 66 years old and have always been fit and followed a healthy life style. Many thanks. Elizabeth Bond

Answer

HI again,
At this point, I am assuming the ECHO is normal, as most cardiologists would have told you otherwise. I would also recommend getting a Holter monitor done - as this will evaluate your heart and YOUR input from you (you can signal when something is going on) and this 24 hour monitor will help to see if there really is something going on with your heart. If a normal ECHO, a normal EKG and hopefully a Normal Holter, you can then rule out a cardiac problem and then you hopefully be assured that it is not your heart. I hope this helps, please take care.

Thank you for your prompt reply - I had the holter monitor on which showed I had an extra heart beat but nobody seemed too concerned. What can I do to stop it - should I take more exercise - the twocardiologists I saw have not advised me in any way - I might just as well have not been to see them!!

Hello,
Usually an extra heart beat, possible a PVC does occur occasionally with some people. There is really not much that can be done and this is okay. If you have excessive beats such as atrial fib - then there are medications that can help this out such as digioxin - however, any medications that are to be used for rate control should be under the care of a doctor that can help. Sometimes, low dose beta-blockers such as atenolol can help too with what you are describing - but again, a doctor who can evaluate you in person so EKG's and other exam can be done to follow you. I hope this helps, take care.
