Question

Hi

about 3 years ago i had gutters installed on my house - houses here don't come with gutters. Today we got some rain and i noticed while outside that at one of the corners of the house, there seems to be water leaking from where the gutter meets the hardy board at the roofline. never noticed it before, but usually when it rains here, it really rains, so never would have noticed it.any ideas what this might be or how to fix? its requires a 40 ft ladder which i don't have, so i will be calling the install company, but want to have an idea of what it is so i dont get taken advantage. gutters and house are only 3 years old.

Thank you for using Just Answer!

There are a many reasons why you may have a gutter that leaks on the corner. It is possible that a seam has separated at the corner and just needs to be caulked again. Butyl caulk or silicone are the typically used.

It is also possible that the gutter has debris in it and has resulted in the accumulation or standing water at this corner. Debris would also alter the correct drainage slope for the gutter.

A rivet may also have worked its way loose in the corner and is allowing water to leak.

Another possibility is that the drip edge on the roof is failing and allowing water enter between the gutter and the fascia. This would give the appearance that the gutter is leaking.

More than likely it is an easy fix such as just sealing a seam or cleaning out the gutter itself.

thanks jay. last question - the gutters and roof edge stick out a way from the house so there's no water leaking down the side of the house or anything. this should just be a minor superficial thing correct? shouldn't be worried about any water damage or anything?

Accepted Answer

Yeah, I wouldnt be concerned about any water damage unless you see any of the fascia with wood rot. Ask the gutter repair company to take a look at the fascia when they are up on the ladder. They will be able to tell if you have any water damage.
