Question

Are infrared heaters, advertised to run on pennies a day, actually worth the bother? We have an average electric bill of $50/month year round and will pay about $270/month for propane heat this year for our 6 cold months.

How many heaters will you need to purchase to effectively heat your home and what is the cost of the infrared heaters that you are looking at?

Well, we were looking at one "on sale" for $350 that's supposed to heat 400 square feet, which would be about the size of our living/dining/kitchen area where we mostly spend our time. Thanks

Thank you for using Just Answer!

Using infrared heat is definitely a way to help reduce your energy/gas bills. The cost to run the infrared heater may cost in the range of a dollar a day, depending upon the size of the heater and how much time you actually use it.

There is the upfront cost of 350.00 to purchase the unit initially and an increase in the electric bill of approx. 30.00 per month would be your expenses. Factoring in these costs, all you would have to do is lower your propane bill each month by 88.00 for the unit to pay for itself the first 6 cold months you use it. I believe you will be able to save more than that each month, thus making the infrared heater a good buy.

They are safe to use around pets and children as well since the units do not get hot.

Feel free to post any follow-up questions you may have.
