Question

our guinea pig has recently developed a white eye. she is a textile breed and around seven months old. her other eye is normal and her eyes are normally black or dark brown. the white in her eye seems to be on the inside of her eye and not the outside. she eats lucerne hay, guinea pig mix- pony pellets, race oats, workhorse mix, corn, black sunflowers, lucerene pellets. also celery, carrot, tomato, cucumber, green apple, broccoli stem, fresh grass when outside, we keep her inside at night.

Hello and thanks for researching this very important question!

Guinea Pigs often get minor scratches on the cornea (outer skin) of the eyes.

Sometimes, however, these scratches can become infected...either with bacteria or mold spores (fungal infection). It may be possible as well that a small piece of hay (or similar debris) is stuck in the cornea.

GPs can develop cataracts, but this is usually a "cloudy" looking phenomenon, and most often found in pets much older than yours.

Any time the eye appears abnormal, we have to assume that a pet needs medical assistance to prevent loss of vision. Corneal infections require prescription medications.
