Question

We added a utility room to our house and moved the cat box in there as well as the cats bed and tower to climb on. The sleep in there at night as well. They were previously in another room in our home. Since moving their items into this new room, my male cat is urinating throughout my house and not using the cat box. We've moved several times and he's NEVER done this before. What can we do to help him and get him to not do this? I now leave him in the that room because he's urinating on everything in my house.

Optional Information

Pet's Sex: Male
Pet's Age: 5

Already Tried:
We've left the door open to the rest of the house, he still won't go in to use the cat box. We added a cat door, he won't go through it, only out of the room. If I let him in the rest of the house at all, he pee's on all the rugs, furniture etc....

Info Request

Hi there,

Does he also eat in that room?
Is it a high traffic room?
Is he fixed?

Standing by to help...

Hi,

Yes he eats and sleeps in that room also. He is fixed and it is not a high traffic room, we actually added it on just for the cats so the cat box and beds etc.. wouldn't be in the actual house. The room is added on to our den, which is not used at all except for looks. We have a female cat that is about 4 and she has not had a problem with the new room at all.

Great,

Thanks for the info...

You should move his feeding area and bedding to a place away from the box. Cats do not like to eat and sleep where they poop and pee.

Be sure to clean all his marking areas with a good enzymatic cleaner such as Nature's Miracle to get rid of the smell. Even if you can not smell it, he can and he will continue to mark the areas. Ammonia and bleach do not work, so don't skimp on this step.

Also be sure you have one litterbox per can plus one extra...as sometimes they do not like to share, and even not like to poop where they pee. Add a product called Cat Attract to the boxes to help get him back into using them.

I hope this helps! Let me know how he does, I will be here all along the way!

Warmest Wishes,

Rean

Thanks for the info. One comment, he has always slept in the same room as his cat box, the only difference is his feeding place. I will try feeding him in a separate room as we previously did. Also, I will add another box and the cat attract.

Thank you,

I will let you know how it goes.

Answer

Sounds like a good plan.

I think that the food and the litter may have been the trigger...could even just been the big change and he is anxious... there are products on the market to help with this. First, you can use a product called 'good cat' which can be purchased at Petco and is added to their water. It is sort of like a St. Johns Wort for cats. Or you can use a product called Rescue Remedy, which is a tincture you can get at health food stores. These will take a week or two to show their effect. Next, there is a spray called Feliway that is also available in a diffuser, sort of like a plug in air freshener. This emits a pheromone smell that the cat interprets as friendly and in turn he will not feel the need to put his mark everywhere This is probably the most expensive, but also one of the most effective.

Keep me posted!

Warmest Wishes,

Reani
