Question

I have two 2 1/2 month chihuahuas which got all their shots this last weekend. Prior to this I was concern that now that I was leaving them outside during the day, they might get fleas so I went out and bought them a flea collar. Today I happen to notice that one of them looks sad and I notice that he is beginning to lose hair and the hair he does have looks all dried out. I did notice also that around his neck there are little red spots (I'm thinking fleas). My main concern is they do not get sick and die. Could you help please help me out

Hi,

With the little guys, you have to be careful with everything. But, please don't worry. They are fragile, but they are resilient.

First off, flea collars are a waste of your money. They don't work, and you can see topical reactions like you are seeing. While they will move the fleas to the back end, usually the dogs have more irritation, and will have hair loss from chewing at fleas. But, make certain that you are dealing with fleas. You will see either live fleas, or what is called flea dirt--little black specks that look like dirt on their skin.

If you see fleas, or are just looking for a flea product, use frontline and dose according to their weight. It is safe, and effective. I see too many people try to cut corners with flea and tick products, and endn up spending far more at their vet. These are great preventative products.

The red spots and the hair loss are likely either secondary to fleas, or secondary to a reaction to the flea collar. Get rid of those, use the correct product, and the problems should go away.

If you ever have questions, don't be afraid to ask. The better prevention you can do, the healthier they will be, and the less money you will spend in the long run.
