Info Request

Hi Tim,

That's a really strange place to have a tick. It is on the skin of the sheath around his penis...or is it directly on the pink part of his penis (the part inside of the sheath)?

How large of a tick is it?

Hi

Its just on the shaft, about halfway down the penis. Its about the size of a small faltened pea, looks like a tiny smooth pebble.

Answer

This is not a common place to find a tick on a dog...however, it is a very common place to find a nipple. Nipples on small male dogs can look exactly how you describe this "tick." You may want to check on the other side of his penis, and see if he has a matching "tick" there. Because I am very suspicious that this may just be a nipple, I do not recommend that you try removing this tick. You should take him to a veterinarian ASAP to have this looked at. If it is a tick, they will remove it appropriately. If it is a nipple, then it is good that you did not try to remove it...as you can imagine, tearing a nipple off of an animal would be quite painful.

I hope that this answers your question, and I wish you the best of luck with your dog.

Not sure if you got my last mesaage.

Its no a nipple. its esactly like the image that I sent a link to you, same color and same shape.

Where its connected to the penis there is some cacked redness (tiny amounts) which I assume is blood.

If the I can confirm this is a tick can I remove myself.

If the vet removes this tick will they anesthetic.

I ask as I have liittle money, can afford the vet.

Thanks

Tim

Answer

Tim,

The vet will not likely use an anesthetic, no. If you are sure that it is a tick, then
you can try to see if the tick will back itself out by applying some cooking oil on the body of the tick. The oil will smother the tick where it should back itself out from the eye lid. The cooking oil will not hurt the eye, but should get the tick out. I will also give you Vet instructions on how to remove it with a pair of tweezers, but it will take a steady hand from you and a couple extra pair of hands from the family.
If the head of the tick gets left in because the removal is done incorrectly, then this could pose a problem. This is why I always recommend that a vet or a vet tech do the removal.

P.S.--If it is a tick, you should be able to see its legs.

Sorry are we talking at odds, this is a tick on a penis shaft, not eye lid.

I assume the same sensitive process and answers apply though.

Thanks Dr K

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry. I am answering two people's questions at once...and the other is about an eye. Yes....I am fully aware that you are talking about the penis shaft. And yes, the same instructions apply.

Very sorry,

Dr. K
