Info Request

madison,

Are you sure you are fighting fleas? What have you used and how often? Are there any other animals around? Are you in a house or apartment building? Have you treated the environment as well?

I will be happy to assist you once I have additional information.

Thank you,

Answer

Okay, you are not treating for fleas in a good systematic way. These bugs are quite stubborn about sticking around the premises. Here is what you do:

1)Get a good quality topical monthly spot on treatment (Frontline, Advantix, Vectra, Revolution) that is veterinary quality. Use if faithfully every 3 weeks for at least 3 months.

2)Vacuum the entire area the dogs have access to thoroughly, spray for fleas, especially carpets, under furniture, behind doors (I recommend Zodiac or Ectokyl). Then vacuum again. Throw out the vacuum bag. Repeat every 2 weeks for at least 3 treatments.

3) If your neighbors have animals that your dogs are in contact with, let them know they also need to provide effective flea control. This is especially true if they visit any other houses - those houses are now infested.

Home remedies and over the counter medications (Hartz, Sargents) are usually useless (flea collars, dawn) or dangerous (Hartz, Biospot). If you are treating the house faithfully every 2 weeks and still have a flea problem in 2 months, you may need to contact an exterminator.

This is my usual flea spiel for clients. I hope it works well for you,

Dr. Karen
