My 10 year old spring has a couple of fatty lumps on his rib cage, over recent weeks he has begun to drink excessively, pees for about a minute each time he pees, he is eating normally, but is losing a lot of weight, is getting lethargic, i.e. doesnt want to always get up and go outside, its as if he cant be bothered - does he have cancer?

Info Request

Is he neutered? What food is he offered? Also is he having normal bowel movements? This info will help get you headed in the right direction.

Yes he is eating normally, but he is drinking an awful lot, each time a bowl of water is put down he drinks the lot. When going outside for the toilet he pees for an eternity... He is on dried complete dog food for senior dogs. Also has the odd lamb bone or treat. He is no longer a jumpy bouncy dog, but one who still wags his tail and comes to you for fuss, but generally has a problem getting up and down from the settee or bed (his back legs).

Accepted Answer

Thanks for the info. There could be a couple of different things going on with your boy. It could be that he is diabetic. This could account for the symptoms that you see. It is also possible that he is having problems with his kidneys. Regardless of which it may be it is important to have him seen by your vet and have bloodwork done to determine exactly what is going on. He may need to be put on insulin or other medications depending on what the problem is. Here are a couple of links that explain about these conditions and what can be done to help him. I hope this helps.
