Question

I have a question related to an 11.5 yer old Dane-mix female (Tessa) I have. We boarded two of our dogs at the end of June when we went out of town. As Tessa has "storm" anxieties, the kennel operator insisted she be prescribed a sedative. We took her to our local vet and they prescribed her 25mg tabs of acepromazine, 1/2-1 tab to be given before a storm. This is where we noticed a considerable down turn in her demeanor, after we returned and took her home. She remained lethargic for several days. She would hardly eat or drink anything. Our vet suggested we just let it run a course. However, now, almost 3 months later, she has not returned to her "old" self. I would guess she has lost close to 15 pounds (she weighed 68 lbs. prior to boarding) she doesn't run in the yard anymore, seems to have trouble standing after getting up from rest, she is unable to jump up on our bed, and is shedding at a chronic rate. Any suggestions?

Answer

It is possible the stress of being kenneled has triggered a health issue. She is a senior dog for her mix so I'd say you've given it plenty of time to resolve after the boarding and now would be a good time to run blood work to check for health issues, test for tick carried diseases which can cause joint and muscle pain, look for arthritis issues etc.

You can read about acepromazine here

http://www.petplace.com/drug-library/acepromazine-promace-aceproject/page1.aspx

just close any pop ups and scroll down the whole page for all the info on that med.

For storm phobia you may want to use melatonin and ask your vet about using that with your dog. You can read about its use here

http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com/melatonin.htm

it was discovered to help dogs with noise phobias at the Tufts Behavior Clinic.

Hope this helps you!

So the processing of blood work may help indicate why she is shedding so excessively also?

Accepted Answer

Yes as any time you have an illness and particularly one that is impacting nutriton intake the coat and skin can be impacted.

Some dogs shed just from stress too! and illness can bring on stress.
