I have a 1999 VW Passat which can't be aligned. (I tried to have it aligned at 2 different places.) I was told that there's a bent right front spindle, although I've never had an accident. I took the car to another VW mechanic who said that he cannot tell by "eyeballing" the spindle if it's bent, but that the rubber on my arms are worn down and that can also cause the car to not be aligned. He recommended that I replace the right arms first to see if the car can be aligned before purchasing a spindle (and ball bearings). What should I do? (from a female who doesn't want to be taken advantage of!)

I trust the vw mechanic more than the alignment shops. Failure of the upper control arms
is very very common on this model. If you have never hit a curb and don't loan your car out then your spindle isn't bent.
Also, you should have the dealer do the alignment because aligning this car sometimes requires the
subframe to be loosened and moved and most other places won't do this even if the car requires it.
