2003 325i 61,500 miles
check battery light came on,
then noticed engine temp gauge was all the way to the right (needle was in the red zone), and then was hard to steer.

If the belt came off the engine it would cause all these problems.....Have you checked to see if the belt is still on?

there's a belt wrapped around the fan blade assembly.

Do you mean it came off and wrapped around the fan or it is on correctly?

looks like it probably came off and got shredded and is wrapped around right behind the fan.   i see a belt that looks okay on what might be the power steering assembly. when I'm facing the car, it's to the left of the fan.

if it's the belt as you suggest, can i drive it to a repair shop?

Answer

It will be hard to steer and you will have to watch that you do not over heat the car as if you do it will cause bigger problems! It depends on how far away the shop is but would suggest towing to be safe.

As far as the type of belt really doesn't matter but normally the belt comes off for a reason so make sure the pulleys it runs on and the components it drives are working correctly as one of them probably caused the belt to come off!

the car was in a front end accident 6 months ago, and Braman BMW replaced the fan assembly and some other front end components. no frame damage. After the repair, the fan assembly came apart on 2 occassions (they fixed it each time by replacing it).

Accepted Answer

They are obviously missing something I would get another opinion on this!
