Question
2001 E38 7 series 728i sport
Transmission Fail Safe message came up on obc
No selected gear position shown on Instrument panel and not able to select any gear in manual mose (steptronic box)
Stop vehicle, turn off ignition then switch back on - everything back to normal until fault re-occurs.
I've noticed that prior to the faul happening I get a thump on gear change.
Took car to specialist and read if there was any fault codes recorded.
Only thing it came back with was 'glue' - garage use 'Winstar Diagnostic Tool'
Garage changed Transmission Fluid and Filter + gasket using correct BMW items.
Fault still persists.
Read fault codes again this morning and 'glue ' code came up again.
Any ideas?

Info Request
Hi, can you be more specific about the "Glue" fault? Is that all it said? No numbers or anything? was this stored in the Trans computer?

Hi
Sorry for the delay - not been near a computer.
The 'GLUE' fault code (EGS module interrogated) was the only message displayed - I'm afraid there were no fault code numbers with it. The garage told me that it was to do with the transmission fluid being quite dirty so they replaced it together with a BMW filter and new gasket.
When this problem re - occurred they put their diagnostics on again and it came back with the same message again.
During the week end I tried my Carsoft diagnostic software and the EGS test came back with three fault codes (Carsoft fault codes are a mystery to me) unfortunately all in German but roughly translated :-
49 - GANG VECHSEL STEPPER - COURSE something STEP BY
56 - GANG UBERWACHUNG / HYDRAULIK UNIT - COURSE MONITORING / HYDRAULIC UNIT
57 - GANG UBERWACHUNG (2 -3) - COURSE MONITORING (2 - 3)
Whilst I had the Carsoft connected I set the EGS Adaption codes back to factory default and funnily enough since Saturday I haven't had the Trans Failsafe Mode come on although I have experienced the thump a couple of times on gear changes - I do however expect the problem to come back.
Hope this helps
Regards
Paul

<p>Hi, this codes often indicate that the transmission is slipping internally. There are no bulletins that come up for a 2001 model. </p><p>The trans will need to be rebuilt, or replaced for this issue. </p>
