Question

I'm a male, 38 years old. I have hyperhidrosis, focussed in the underarm area. I'm of normal weight, 169 lb 5'10". I've had my thyroid checked in the past and it came out fine. Also checked for diabetes also fine. Just sitting at my desk at work, the underarms of my shirt will be drenched within a few hours. I sweat mostly in enclosed environments, such as meeting rooms, offices. I wear undershirts, take cool showers every morning, have a fan constantly on me at work, drink plenty of water. I've used prescription anti-perspirants, with no results.

I'm actually not even embarrassed by it at this stage, as it's being going on for years.
However in a professional environment, it's unsightly and odd to see a person's shirt drenched with sweat when they're just sitting there. I started using Dexedrine recently for ADD, and my body seems to have heated up even more. Would rather not use drastic surgery to stop sweating. Just want to figure out how to stop from over-heating. Thanks.

Optional Information

Gender: Male
Age: 38

Already Tried:
anti-perspirants, shaving armpits, cool showers, drinking plenty of fluids. Have seen a dermatologist who recommended botox, too expensive though and I don't like the idea of chemicals in my body.

Answer

Greetings.

The excessive sweating in armpits is considered as primary hyperhidrosis, as there is no cause except the sweat gland in the skin are increased in size and they respond excessively to body's hormones (increased cholinergic sympathetic stimulation of the sweat glands in the axilla). But before going for any definite treatment, it is ideal to check the thyroid and adrenal gland of the body, to rule out any abnormality, as they can secondarily cause excessive sweating. Your internal medicine specialist or primary care physician would be able to get it done.

Following is the treatment protocol;

1) dietary restriction of coffee, tea, cola soft drinks, and chocolate.

2) application of aluminum chloride hexahydrate or zirconyl chloride in absolute alcohol

3) iontophoresis, done by dermatologists in their office

4) medications like atropine, propranolol

5) Botox injection

Please feel free for your follow up questions.
