Question

my husband broke his back over 10 years ago. Since then he has been taking percocet almost daily for the pain. Up until about 4 years ago, he took his medication as prescribed, most months having pills from his prescriptions left over, but there were months where he would have particularly bad time and end up running out the day before his doctors appointment. 4 years ago he starts snorting his pills, telling me when I questioned him that it effected him faster and had a much better effect on his pain. I, being the enabler that I obviously am, didnt say much, let him continue. Well, now, things are terribly out of hand. He is prescribed 120 percocet 15 per month, but if these last 10 days, he is doing well. He is up to anywhere between 10-25 pills per day (depending if they are 10's or 15's), buying them whereever he can. I need to get him into a rehab facility ASAP, but know he will not go willingly. Can someone please give me the dangers to pass along to help convince him??

Answer

Greetings.

The main problems associated with the Percocet is a physical dependence and gradual tolerance developing with the doses which need further increase in the medication and addiction liability. In long term it would give craving for the medication and serious physical and psychological dependence. Percocet contains acetaminophen. The high doses of acetaminophen used regularly for long term can cause irreversible liver damage. So he needs to go to a rehab facility as soon as possible for the treatment.
