Question

Just had my 1992 plymouth sundancer alternator replaced (2nd time around) the next day
heard this terrible high pitched whirring noise, brought it back to the mechanic who had trouble finding the rite replacement part, so he put in a new one. Next day the same thing
happened, only worse, took it in, he put soap on the alt. belt, and it was fine on the drive
home, the next morning (I start for work at 3am) it was back with a vengence! So now
he says I can spray it with something I can buy until I have a chance to bring the car to him again, so I do what he says(he's the mech.) and go to autozone, the 20 year old shakes his head and tells me...its not the belt, its the pulley...what? And he adds you don't need a new belt, you need a new mechanic!

WHAT? I need an experts input on this, I'm bringing it in again tomorrow. Do I (I'm a
female, car challenged) mention this to him, I have had the same mechanics for almost
5 yrs, and have spent much money to keep these wheels running.

Answer

Don't be so quick to condemn your local mechanic, who it seems you have trusted for 5 plus years.

You have to keep in mind you were talking to a "parts" person with minimal experience at best. He sells parts and does not repair vehicles for a living.

I'm not trying to say either of them is right or wrong.......just consider the source of the info you were just given.

You can always get a second mechanical opinion......but I would suggest staying away from a "parts" person diagnosis.

Ok but...you're probably right....I hope anyway, I like the guys, but ...yeah it's an old car,,,,falling apart....but I've spent within the last year and half almost 3,000 for repairs it started with a transmission seal. Now...what is your xpert opinion on why its making that noise.

Answer

One of the biggest issues on these cars/engines, has been the rubber mounting bushings on the alternator bracket. Over time these bushings wear out and cause the alternator to sit a little bit crooked. Not much......just by looking.....but enough to throw the belt out of alignment a tad.

This alignment issue causes the belt to make noise. These bushings were discontinued from Chrysler a long time ago and were only available with the complete bracket.......which was pretty pricey. The ones we have done recently, we sourced out a used bracket assembly and advised the customer that it is a used part........or they had the option of a new one.........haven't had a customer opt for a new part yet.

this up for them?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely......feel free to print this and take it to them.
