Question

My daughters dwarf hamster rolled down the stairs in her ball when we took her out to check if she was ok she spat out her food. Later today my daughter said she rolled on her back and spat out somemore food. And this evening she rolled on her back again. In every other way she is fine and still active. Do dwarf hamsters spit out their food sometimes and do they roll on their backs?

XXXXXXXXXXX,

As you may know, hamsters store food in their cheek pouches. I suspect a small amount of that food was dislodged when she rolled down the stairs, so she was spitting it out to remove it from her airway. Normal hamsters are known to do this, as well as roll on their backs. As long as she is eating/drinking/moving normally, I expect she is just fine after her adventure. I highly recommend blocking off stairwells whenever the hamster is out playing.
