1999 Mazda Protege 1.6 Ltr. I've just replaced both belts now when the A/C is on it's a constant squeal. I have tighten the belts to the point of overtightening them to see what would happen and always a constant squeal. I've tried light belt dressing and still the sqeal. I have yet check any bearings on the alt, water pump or power steering.

Any suggestions???? I'm at my wits end.

Hi,how are you,from what you are describing it sounds like the ac compressor clutch might be your culprit,the compressor pulley itself will spin as normal ,but when the ac is engaged the clutch could be sticking causing your squeal,hope this helps,also protégé often have ac issues,i have owned 4 of them personally.

any way of test ing short of rplacement??

Well,it is not easy while it is on the car,when removed it can be tested by removing the clutch an checking for bad bearing inside,but then of course yo will loose all your freon,one way to look at it to rule out your other pulleys,is that it does when ac is engaged.
