Question

i have a evinrude 200 xp professionaly rebuilt about 40hrs ago which was 6 yrs ago due to work schedule , it runs at idle fine but when i puit it under load to get on plane it has a sikip and loses power . this problen is intermitent because one day u can run fine and the next it wont go ,i have cleaned carbs totally , put a new vro pump on it when it runs it runs perfect . the skip or loss of power comes in at 3200 to 3500 rpms and if you get buy that with no problems it might do it at top end , it almost seems like there is a short in the elect system not sure . by reading my evinrude manual i feel like it could be my power pack any suggestions

Answer

The first thing to do would be to remove each ignition coil one at a time, clean the cyl head mounting surface and the ground straps and reattach the coils. We are looking to ensure we have them all well grounded.

Then take a timing light out in the boat with you and have someone drive, running it at the point where it begins to misfire.

Check each plug lead one at a time looking for a cyl with erratic or intermittent spark.

Record the cyl(s) that seem to be misfiring and let me know what you find.

that seems quite dangerous since the only time it misfires is just about on plane at 3200 to 3500 rpms . if you get past that point it will get on plane and run fine with maybe an occasional miss up on top end . i can hardlly imagine hanging off the back of my stratos with a 10 inch jake plate trying to watch a timing light from 30 to 60 mph . can i check ohm resistance on coils , powerpack and power coil first to try to eliminate this problem?? i do not have proper tools to do power output test on these parts . i am going to check some of these tonight if i have enough light . note closest lake or source of water to access is 40 plus miles . would like to narrow down my search without makeing several trips to the water

Trim the engine enough to try to get the rpm you need to induce the problem.</p>
