Question

Hi~ My 8 month english bulldog spent a night at a shelter last night. They fed him food ( alot of it) other than his Royal Canine. After 5 hours home, some good runs, 2 poops ( somewhat loose ) he threw up 7 times - SO much food - finally bile around time 6 and 7. He is sleeping, but seems to be bothered... all bulldogs have labored breathing, but this seems to be a bit more than normal. Can I feed him good food now to help with the acid? Should I suspect blockage or something in the air way? He seems so sad :(

Answer

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear what your dog went through. It sounds likely that with the overload of food, he developed a food bloat. Basically, the stomach can fill up so much, it has nowhere to go but back up.

It is extremely important for you to do two things: keep him as rested as possible for the next 24 hours so that his stomach doesn't flip and twist on itself, causing a blockage in or out (which requires immediate surgery to save him), and NOT feeding him anything at all for the next 24 hours. We want him to vomit, and I'm glad he did- this got some out, and with the diarrhea, he should be ok to start small amounts of food at a time in a day.

You want to watch him closely the next 24 hours for signs of severe distress: excessive panting, enlarging abdomen (from the gas buildup), lethargy, and no longer able to vomit anything up (though possibly trying, getting saliva up). These are signs an emergency vet would be your best bet.

When you feed after 24 hours, start with only a couple of tsps of a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice, to help settle his stomach at that point, and firm up that stool. After a a few hours, offer another 2 tsp. Gradually you can increase the amount until the next day where he can have a normal serving of that bland diet only for 2 or 3 times a day only instead of tiny amts with a few hours in between.

After a couple of days of bland food, gradually switch back to normal diet.

If at any point he is distressed, he will need a vet, and DO keep him as calm and rested (crated if needed) as possible.

Best wishes!

Christine

OOHHH ~ thank you! I will definitely accept, and I am so grateful for your time.

Am I able to see symptoms of bloat? I did notice earlier that his lower abdomen seemed distended but it seems to have receded.

And to be clear, if he continues to 'dry heave' I should see the vet. It is expected that when all the food is out, he will begin to find some relief.

He is crated, and we will give him rest and love. Again, thanks so much for your advice!

The symptoms I mentioned are the ones to look out for to notice a GDV, which many people call "bloat" but in actuality is bloat ALONG with a twisting of the stomach. Just "bloat" alone is dangerous when it can lead to the twisting, and it sounds like your pup is already bloated. You want to see constant improvement for now, no declines at all!

Since it seems to be receding, that is a great sign! Dogs this size don't twist often, but it can happen.

Dry heaving for now is expected. Dry heaving with other signs of decline are not. Indeed, he will be feeling better and better with time, and then want food- but hold out for 24 hours. If looking great, you can offer very tiny amounts of water after 12 hours, few sips every couple of hours, until fasting is over.

Good luck, don't hesitate to come back if you need more help.

Christine
