I have a 1995 excel which has starting problems intermitently - happens 1 or 2 times a fortnight. It starts to wind over then stops and then nothing - walk away and come back a few hours later and it starts. I have changed the ignition switch and had the starter motor checked. Help Barry H

The wind over do you mean its turning the motor over but dosnt start then stop turning the motor over and then nothin? or is the starter spining with out turning the motor over.

Does the motor turn over and it does not start or does it try to turn over and wont complete its turning and wont start. Very important in trouble shooting is to be elaberate. Thanks Dan

It trys to turn over the motor and wont complete its turning over. when you try to start it again nothing happens at all.

OK did you take the starter out of the car to have it checked?

The motor tries to turn over but does not turn over (like if you have a flat battery) then stops trying to turn over and then nothing at all. The starter motor does not operate at all after that has happened. PS - it is not the battery as was doing it before and after a new battery.

Answer

OK you have a bad ground or a loose connection. You need to inspect all your wire on starter and the battery and follow thim then fallow your altenator wires. Since you did tell me the starter was good I think you are going to find it there. But if it does it again keep a hammer with you and smack the body of the starter while trying to start the car, Give it several good wacks and if it starts its your starter. You might need help trying to start it and rapping it with a hammer at the same time.

Hi Dan - tried the hammer method already and the aouto elect checked connections when he checked the starter motor.

Do you sense it is getting hot (wiring) when you have the key on and nothing happens. And does this happen when you have driven it it and then come back out and it wont start or does this happen in the morning too when it has rested all night?

No there is no sence of anything getting hot - happens when car has been sitting for a while - in the morning or after work.

You need to get that car wiring looked at by some one else. I would love to have it in front of me with a nice flash light. But all I can do is tell you where the problem is.. Thanks Dan
