Question

I finally succeeded in exporting Windows Contacts to the Contacts section of Outlook 2003 on my Compac Presario Vista Home Prof desktop pc. (I had just about given up on figuring out how to do this!) But, it imported as 3 separate groups of data: the first was just emails, from A to Z (no names, just email addresses; the 2nd group was all the data on personal contacts, but w/out their NAMES (it had their addys, phones, emails, etc.); and the 3rd group is complete info on all business contacts (starting w/their name). Can you help figure out how to make 1, comprehensive list of all of my contacts, that starts with the name, includes email and all other info I may have on them? Also, any way to update - just once - contacts/calendar in both places (Outlook & Vista)?
BTW, the reason for using O2003 is that I have an HP IPAQ 110 Classic Handheld PC that I bought this year as my previous pda's OS wouldn't synch w/Vista. Using O2003/pda 4 calendar & contacts. Using W Mail on desktop only.

Optional Information

Computer OS: Windows Vista
Browser: IE

Already Tried:
i looked again at the import process (i first exported from W Contacts to my downloads folder) in Outlook 2003. The only step that I see that may affect how my contacts appear is the mapping box. It allows me to move fields into and out of what is going to be imported. I can't figure out how to consolidate the groups (not to mention the person contacts' names didn't show up anywhere). I remember reading somehwere that first and last name shouldn't be selected, just 'name,' which already appears on the right-hand column (what is to appear in the import).

Info Request

Hi,

What program are you exporting FROM and what program are you exporting TO

this is important to figure out the proper mapping.

I have done this numerous times, and its not a simple process.

but it can be done reasonably well.

Please get me those answers and we can continue...

Thanks

Carl

well, going back to the start..... i had addresses and calendar in Outlook 2000 on my old computer, and i believe earlier this year i saved all data on a cd, w/an outlook.pst file/folder. when i tried to install O2003, i encountered registry problems and, after many attempts, w/the help of justanswer expert, had to do a complete system recovery and started from scratch. voila, i could finally install O2003!

so, what was once Outlook 2000 data, now became Vista's Windows Contacts and Windows Calendar. (i didn't know at the time that I would need O 2003 or I would have imported directly from O2000 to O2003.) i tried to import from both the cd (O2000 data) and from the desktop pc's Windows Contacts into Outlook 2003. i encountered problems w/the cd, it said that my access was denied, needed permission. when i checked under properties, the cd said it was 'read only.' i tried repeatedly to uncheck this and import again, w/no luck. the checkmark kept reappearing. giving up on the cd, i was unable, up until today, to figure out how to export from Windows Contacts into Outlook 2003. i first exported a .csv (Windows)-formatted file from WContacts to my download folder (i think this was per W help). then i imported this file from Outlook 2003. i hope this answers your question (i figured too much info is better than not enough!)

Answer

if you have a .pst file of outlook 2000 data, just copy that on to your C: drive in some folder.

then open outlook 2003 and select file, import, etc.. and browse to the outlook 2000 pst file.

once you start dumping to CSV files it loses half the information.

because you have two outlook files to work with (2000 and 2003) the import is really easy.

does your 2000 pst file contain most of the contacts you are concerned about??

wow, i can't believe how easy that was! unfortunately, i chose to allow duplicates, so now i have to delete, one by one, all the entries from the earlier attempt (!)

to answer your question, yes, i think my 2000 pst file has most of the contacts. i probably should have made an updated cd copy (I still have my old computer and pda set up until all of my computer problems have been solved). i guess if i do that now, if i select the choice that doesn't allow duplicates, i can get any updates to contacts that i may have on my old pda (which i'm still using until i get these kinks solved), right?

now for the secondary question i posted: as i make additions, changes, whatever on my new pda and want to synch to my desktop, is there an easy way i can update both the Vista programs (Windows Contacts and/or Calendar) and the Outlook files?

for some reason, i could not burn another copy of O2000. i tried twice, ea time it said 'error reading file.' so, i may have to go item by item in each file and compare old info to new info to make my O2003 be current. sigh.

pls do answer the other part of my question re future changes, ok? (i assume you're offline now, altho it says the opposite, and that is why you haven't responded)

Hi,

I have setup peoples phones/PDAs to sync with outlook. It all depends on the application that comes with your phone/pda.

Some allow two-way sync, some one way. For the ipaq I am not sure since I have not used that application.

but if you hunt through the sync settings in the ipaq app, that is most likely where you will find the ability to alter the sync properties.

there are no settings in outlook that i am aware of.

about duplicates, its not so good at detecting them, so you may want to start with an empty contacts folder and just do a fresh reload of your contacts from the 2000 pst.
