Is your check engine light on? If so, have you had it checked for codes? Does the light turn on when you hit the Overdrive button? Thanks

Accepted Answer

It sounds like you may have a failing knock sensor, when these fail it does not allow the vehicle to shift into overdrive. Another couple thing that could cause this is the engine coolant temp sensor failing or thermostat. The transmission will not shift into overdrive with engine temperature below 140 degrees F. Bring your vehicle to your local parts store or quick lube to have the codes checked for free, if it indicates a knock sensor replace. If not you can reply to this answer at anytime even after you accept and I can give more assistance with the code. But it sounds like either your knock sensor or the engine coolant temp sensor has failed. Let me know if you have questions. Thanks

Thanks, will do. How tough a job is this, if it is a thermostat I have replaced them on

other vehicles. What is involved to replace the knock sensor.

Is the od problem related to the rough idle problem?

Yes, I'm pretty sure the overdrive not working and the rough idle are caused by the same problem which could be the temp sensor or knock sensor. First have your codes checked and let me know and we will go from there. Thanks again.

My local store doesn't check codes anymore, somebody screwed up a good thing. I live in smaller town so I will need to check w/ my mechanic tomorrow. If I drive it I won't get the mileage but it shouldn't hurt the engine if I drive reasonable. What do you think?

Ya you wont hurt the engine at all just dont try to drive at full throttle or anything. You could also try to go to your local valvoline or whatever quick oil change place you have around there. They will usually check the codes for free too. Let me know what you find out or if you have questions, thanks.
