Question

Maytag washing machine is making a loud noise during operation. I checked to make sure the machine was level. It sounds like metal rubbing on metal. The machine still runs. I took off the back panel to try and listen to it better w/not much luck. I have a Maytag oversized capacity plus washer mav-3. The Model # is MAV5000AWW. Serial # 10457352WZ.

Answer

There's a gearbox assembly attached to the agitator drive spindle. It sounds as if it has failed. You can check it by rotating the agitator in both directions. If it turns if both directions, it has failed.

Post back to me, if you wish further assistance.

John, I put machine on mini cycle and after it filled w/water I could notice from peaking under the lid of the machine it was rotating in both directions. How do I go about replacing the gearbox assembly

Answer

So far, so good. Turn to machine off, then see if the agitator turns in both directions by hand. If it's good, it will not allow you to turn it in one of the two directions.

It allows me to turn in both directions, so this does mean it is bad.

Accepted Answer

Yes, unfortunately, it does mean it's failed. Replacing the gearbox is a major undertaking, and the part is expensive. I suggest that you contact a local service person for a phone quote for the job, before proceeding further. It will help you decide what to do next.

Sometimes the news is not good but I appreciate your prompt responses.

P.S. - On the site just answer.com it says they will notify me when you had responded but it didn't seem to do that at all after the initial response. Just and FYI.

Thanks John.

Answer

The system will probably do that later, we're having a very busy day. Thank you.
