Question

I have a GE side to side refrigerator, Model number GSS25JEMDWW.

I have had to defrost what I call the defrost coils (take off the panel in the back of the freezer and remove the accumulated ice using a hair dryer) with inceasing frequency. Now I seem to be down to once a week or less.

What do I need to replace? Is it the defroster heater or the themostat? How can I tell?

Thanks.

Hi
Do you have access to a volt meter? The thermostat can be tested for continuity,as well as the heater.Usually you can see if the heater is bad,as it will be visibly burnt. To check the board, unplug the unit and pull the cover on the outside rear to access the board.you will see a blue connector with 3 wires.Look on the board where the connector is,it will say line, comp, and heater.Unplug the connector and jump the line and heater with a short peice of insulated wire, jump the connector only ,not the board.Plug in the unit and see if the heater,or heaters if it has 2 come on.If they do the board is bad,if not the heater or defrost terminater is bad. Most ge come withe both heater and terminater. If you have no access to a meter, unplug the unit and jump the terminater as well as the board and replug.
