Question

After spendig 10 days at a my vet's kennel my cat is bleeding during urination and appears to be struggling to go, however she seems incontinent also. Today she had two accidents. She is almost 20 years old and has a thyroid condition as well. She had her blood level checked about a month ago and her kidney levels were elevated. Could she be suffering from kidney failure or kidney stones?

Thanks for the question Alex P.

What you are dealing with sounds very like a urinary tract infection { UTI } also called cystitis. In the female cat while this disease will be uncomfortable it is not generally a serious situation.

The signs of a UTI which is a bladder infection in the cat would be some or all of the following :

1. Increased frequency of urination.

2. Dysuria : Discomfort on urination and trying to urinating for a prolonged period of time, and only able to pass very small amounts of urine if any.

3. The urine may be blood tinged or discoloured if she passes any.

Uncomplicated UTIs are common in the cat and usually respond well to a course of antibiotics or other medication and resolve easily. There are other diagnostic possibilities though such as stones in the bladder or even cancer of the bladder but this would be very rare.

I am sorry I cannot suggest any home remedy here the only advice I can give you is to have your vet check the cat out as soon as is practicable at the next available routine consultation, antibiotics and the other drugs used are prescription only.

Here is a link to a good web site on the subject : LINK
