Question

My 1 year old Boxer is always following us around. We leave a room and he will come and generally ust stand and watch until we are finished then tag along to the next room. If I am home alone and walk outside to get the trash, he will run up the stairs on out landing to see where I am. Then greet me on my return. He generally likes to lay around and sit on top of us if possible. :) He literally has THE BEST tempermant of any dog I have been around. He is always so gentle, and humble. He ws a stray we found. He is not shy at all, but simply very polite! We are concerend he has some anxiety issues possibly.

Although, he has ran off twice in the past 2-3 weeks. Both times he has ran to hang out with some random dog, that I assume the owner lets run around the neighborhood.

Any thoughts?

Hi XXXXXXXXXXXX~

My own dog does the exact same thing...follows me from room to room. I'm not so sure it's anxiety, but rather a genetic need for a dog to be with the rest of his pack...and you and your family are his pack.

As long as he's not destructive when you leave him home alone, and doesn't get whiney or nervous when you're not there, I don't think I'd worry about him tagging along with you in the house. There aren't many dogs who don't do that...so as long as it doesn't bother you, and he's perfect in every other way...I say let him follow.

I hope this helps.

He is not really destructive. Well anymore. :) We used to keep him in our laundry room when we left, but he clawed that door to pieces. So we now have a runner outside for him. When my wife leaves with our 6 yr old, he will kind of whimper for a bit and check all of the windows to watch them. Then he kind of paces a bit. After about 15 minutes he calms down. I have heard that Boxers in particular are like this. First one, so I am not sure.

Answer

That does sound like a typical boxer!

He sounds like a good dog...and as he gets older, he'll start calming down faster..he's still a youngster, so you've got a little time before he's completely calm!
