Question

My small terrier-mix dog got into the other dog's (a Great Dane) food today and ate almost all of it (in addition to his own). The Great Dane eats a half-cup chicken mixed in with a little less cottage cheese. The terrier-mix is a smaller dog, about 17 pounds, and usually eats a handful of Origin dry kibble and a third of a 5.5 oz. can of Prescription Diet a/d wet food. Should I be worried about how much the terrier-mix dog ate? Is it dangerous? Is there anything that can be done about it? Is there anything I should be on the lookout for and anything we shouldn't do?

Answer

Hello,

A half cup of chicken with some cottage cheese isn't a tremendous amount for your terrier, so I wouldn't get too paranoid over this, but what you want to do is keep an eye on your terrier mix and watch for signs of bloating. Overeating can fill up the stomach dramatically so that the abdomen literally bloatds, and you may notice it enlarge. It would be extremely important for the next 12 hours as well to keep him calm and avioding running and jumping around, which although much more common in large dogs like your dane, can still result in the stomach twisting in a smaller dog. Vomiting wouldn't be unexpected, and wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing either, so don't let that worry you either. Just watch he seems comfortable, rested, and do not feed anything else at all for the next 12 to 24 hours (depending on how he 'feels'), and only small amounts of water at a time (you don't want to add more to that stomach). Enlarged abdomens along with panting and seeming in distress are signs he needs a vet, but it wouldn't be likely to get that far with what he's eaten.

Hope this makes sense. Best wishes,

Christine
