My 10 year old dog has been wheezing latley and has now twice started sneezing out blood. I have a vet appointment in 2 days, but was wondering if you have any thoughts on it?

Info Request

What breed is he?

Has he ever had a problem like this before?

Is his breathing regular?

Did he ever completely get over the kennel cough or was there a lasting cough?

How was he treated for kennel cough? Any coughing now?

Does he go outdoors unsupervised?

Any history of allergies?

He is a lab/collie cross. This is the first time he has ever sneezed anything. The wheezing has been occuring over the last month and a bit. he often breathes heavily. He lost the cough after treatment. He had a series of shots for 10 days, and antibiotics. He never goes out unsupervised. Very much an indoor dog.

He gets hot spots every year, but no know allergies.

Answer

Thanks for replying.

As long as the blood coming out isn't excess, or bleeding isn't occurring when not sneezing or having recently sneezed, I'm not surprised there is blood coming out. It is likely the sneezing has irritated his nasal cavity and caused this.

The wheezing is upsetting and with a somewhat recent history of kennel cough, I'm worried he may have never truly recovered and that he has developed an upper airway inflammation, possibly with pneumonia. If this started up somewhat 'out of the blue' it is much more likely to be illness than allergies.

I would get him a vet appointment for as soon as you can. In the meantime, you want to cut back on congestion and any wheezing by having him in the bathroom during steamy showers, having a humidifier nearby, or even nebulizing (nebulizers sold in pharmacies) a few times a day if possible.

Sometimes, with dogs outdoors, or dogs who like to 'sniff' things a lot, a blade of grass, mold, fungus, or other foreign thing gets inhaled and can either irritate the upper airways or even get stuck in their, causing infection, sneezing and bleeding. A thorough exam of the nasal cavity as well as a chest xray are likely in order.

In less likely cases with this breed mix, heart problems can cause a build up of fluid in the chest, cause wheezing, and the blood pressure can ride causing nose bleeds. Bleeding deep in the nasal cavity can cause the sneezing. The way you described this however sounds more likely the sneezing caused the bleeding. Just keep an eye on it and make sure the blood is lighter red, not dark, and that it is a minimal amount of blood, not constant dripping or full-on nose bleed.

I wish I could help you narrow this down more, and hope this has shed light on the most likely possibilities, but your dog will need to see a vet to rule out the more serious things and get started on treatment for that wheeze.

Let me know if I can help further with anything, and good luck.

Thanks Christine,

We have also found he is very irratable latley, snapping and nipping our other dog, and even showing some aggression towards me. I was thinking that is just because is not feeling very well?

Accepted Answer

That is a common reason for changes in personality. When not feeling well, just like us, we have a lower threshold and tolerance for things, and this may be his way of warning the other dog, as well as you, not to mess with him much because it may make him feel even more discomfort.
