Info Request

HI amycress,

Does he seem to be constipated?

Is he interested in food and water?

Is he walking slower or more gingerly than normal?

He is having problems with steps and is he also having problems jumping on furniture?

Have you checked his anal glands for any swelling or soreness?

Answer

Thank you for that information. Beagles are prone to disc problems known as intervertebral disc disease and this can happen in the neck region or lower spine. This is when the soft tissue that cushions the disc suddenly turns hard and presses on the spinal cord. This can cause back pain, show lameness in one or more limbs, a reluctance to climb steps, play, or jump on furniture, and the dog may yelp when handled or touched in more severe cases. Depending on how much the disc is pressing on the spine will determine the amount of symptoms you will see. Generally anti inflammatory drugs and rest are prescribed. More severe cases will require surgery. A regular x ray will in most cases not pick this up but a myelogram needs to be done (dye injected into the spinal canal). If at any time the dog looses the use of the rear legs and has no feeling in them, then the disc may have ruptured into the spinal canal and this requires immediate help.

what kind of inflammatory drugs can be used?

Answer

Although I can't tell you what to use, I can tell you that aspirin has been used as an anti inflammatory. However this can only be used for two days at best or stomach ulcers can develop. When this is used you must tell your vet as other pain medication may have to wait until the aspirin leaves the body. I am going to direct you to a site for side effects and dosing. Do not use products such as motrin, or acetaminophen (Tylenol & Advil)

should i just care for him at home and see if he improves or does he need to go to the vet this is the first time this has happen, and its been about 2 days now today he seems to be moving better and pooping a little better. i just want him to feel better!

Answer

Well, keep him very well rested and try alternating warm an cool packs on the back to take down any swelling. IF he doe not show improvement in a couple of days, and some do get right back to their normal selves once the pressure is relieved, then see a vet for at least a safer alternative of pain medication. Generally with small dogs they recommend medication and strict rest for a period of a few weeks. So even if he seems back to his old self in a couple of days , don't push him just yet, give it about another week or two of rest.
