I have had a chronic cough for 3 months and have went to the er 3 times my family doctor 4 times and have took 5 diffrent antibotics multiply steriod shots and steriod pills, the test at the hospital have all come back clear but the docotor said my lungs sound like trash. I had a couhing attack and something in my shoulder blade popped and it was the most severe pain I have ever felt but the test showed clear the doctor gave me lortab and said good luck. I know that there s something wrong with me. But what is it?

I am 37 years old I had 3 chest x-rays and were clear. I am a female and an occasional smoker up until now. there is no other medicine that I am taking and no other illness.

Answer

If the chest xray is clear and there is chronic cough and if you are not on any other medications, and also no improvement with steroid shots then the possibilities are -
1. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
2. Post nasal drip

Upper Gi endoscopy and 24 hours pH monitoring may be done to see if you have GERD.
Sinus examination may be done to rule out postnasal drip.
