Question

I have been diagnosed with high blood pressure and this has been kept under control by my taking 8mgs of Perindopril daily.     I do check my blood pressure quite regularly using a blood pressure monitor.

Last Friday I felt rather light headed and decided to check my blood pressure.    It was just over 150/75.    I have been regularly checking it over the weekend and still occasionally feeling "fuzzy headed".    It has varied between normal (i.e. below 120/70) and high (140-150) at times.

I have this year been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and this is well under control.

As my mother died of a stroke, and my maternal grandmother also had several strokes during her lifetime, I don't know if I'd be prone also.

I am 63 years of age, my height is around 5'3" and my weight is 9st.

Do I need to see my own doctor about this, should I be worried as up until now my blood pressure has been well controlled by the Perindopril. Would I need different medication.

Hi and thanks for the reply. It would be a pleasure to help you today.

Your systolic number (top number) of your blood pressure is running a little higher than normal. This might be something you would want to mention to your Dr. While it is not at a 'dangerous' level at these numbers, it could certainly be a little better.

Yes, I would recommend that you see your Dr to have your blood pressure checked in the office and they might suggest that you wear a 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring device home. I will periodically take your blood pressure at timed intervals (on it's own) and then record the readings. You Dr will review the results once the monitor has been turned in and take an 'average' of what the pressure readings were and go from there. You might, indeed, need your blood pressure medication changed or increased. Most will want you to keep a blood pressure log (which is just where you take the blood pressure over a few weeks time and keep a record of the readings) OR they will put the monitor on you. Either way, I think it would be best for you to let your Dr know that the top number is running a little high and see which approach he/she wants to take to correct it.

Hope this helps!
