Question

1990 bmw 325i convertible wont' start. New battery, new spark plugs, replaced the fuel pump relay. Engine cranks as if it is going to start but will not. With the key turn I believe that I hear the fuel pump working.

Answer

Good afternoon, I hope I can help you.

You need to check you are getting a spark at the sparkplugs. I would also advise replacing the fuel as it will have went off after sitting so long. Try using either easy start or by carefully pouring a little fresh petrol into the inlet manifold and trying to start it.

My name is XXXX XXX if you need further help, just ask.

Easy start or poring fuel into the inlet manifold??? Please provide greater detail. No idea where to locate the inlet manifold. Please don't laugh as this is the1st time I have ever worked on a car and trying to learn as I go. I have the Bentley manual as a guide.

Answer

Ok. You'll find inlet manifold by following hose from airflter box to the engine. Unscrew clip and pull off hose. If you get someone to work throttle pedal you will see butterfly valve move. This area is where you pour a little petrol in carefully or use 'easy start' spray.

Using both can be dangerous, so if you are really that inexperienced you should use a local garage or mechanic.
