Question

My water pump just went on my 2000 bmw 540i wagon - the belts are broken, and it got hot so I just had it towed home. Two weeks ago my mechanic replaced the left and right arm bushings and did an alignment. One week ago, my AC needed to have the service ports replaced and the freon recharged. And now this. How much am I looking at in repairs? Is this too much coincidence or just natural given the vehicle's age? It has been a hot summer here in Arizona.   I have 80K miles.   Time to trade it in?   Thanks, in advance, for your help!

Hi, it's not really a coincidence since the issues aren't related.
The pumps fail around 80k normally, and they should be replaced as maintenance to preventative breakdowns, along with the radiator, expansion tank, and upper and lower hoses.

If the thermostat is orignal, they should put a new thermostat on as well. Since it needs to be removed when the pump is done, so no labor for that.

The price on the pump is $250, thermostat $120. 1 gallon of bmw coolant $20, new belt $50
Labor time 4 hours.
So plan on $800-$900.

I wouldn't trade the vehicle in solely for this issue, all cars eventually break as parts wear out.
If you no longer like the car, or its not meeting your needs, then I would trade for that reason.
