Question

Hello There,

We just adopted a 11 yo persian calico cat from a shelter a week ago. When I started petting her today, I notices a wierd feeling skin area on her back. Upon further inspection, I noticed that in an area of apx 1 inch oval in shape, that her hair was falling out in tiny clumps. With brushing it came out completely into this oval shape. The skin under it is has the appearance of dandruff with black in it. The edges of the hair loss are dandruff like, non raised, NOT red or erythematous. I took some of the dandruff with the black in it and wet it down to see if it was flea stuff.....it did NOT turn red or smear.

I am concerned that she may have mange or something else. We adopted a cat a year ago and she had ringworm and vicking mites. It doesn't look quite like this, but am concerned as we have three other cats and don't want them to get what she has......Our vet is off today so can't reach him.

Any thoughts? and anything we can do over the weekend?

Answer

Dear Angela,

The hair may have fallen out because it was matted. The matts do pull on the skin.

However, I would be concerned about ringworm. It does not sound like mange.

You can go to PetSmart or another large pet store and purchase "miconazole" shampoo. Wash her in that. Leave it on for 15 minutes before rinsing. I know that sounds like great fun.

That is what I would do for the weekend.

Keep her away from the other cats. It may be too late...

Hopefully it is not ringworm.

If you have a blacklight you can try shinning it on the spot. The skin will often flourese if it is ringworm. Do not count the dandruff because that always glows.

Thank you very much.......I was worried about that as well. Should we bath the other cats or just wait and see.

Accepted Answer

You are very brave. Yes, if you have help, bathe all the cats. Better safe than sorry.

If you have a dog (s) wash them too.

Maybe you could trim everyone's nails tonight in preparation?
