Question
I heard that if you buy a laptop for school, you can now claim it Under the new American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Those Laptops, Notebooks, and netbooks are qualified as higher education expenses. I do need a laptop for class, so I was just wondering as to if that is true

I found the original statement on Circuit city while I was looking at laptops. After I saw the statement, I began to look up online if it is in fat true, and what are the qualifications, but I cannot find anything. Just wondering if I can claim my new laptop as a higher education expense, and what qualifies. Thanks

Amers,
Here is the IRS article pertaining to your question:
http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/article/0,,id=177996,00.html
.
What it says is "course materials" are now included as deductible expenses. There isn't a specific list of materials that are deductible. However, the IRS says "equipment NEEDED for a course of study". If you need a laptop for your courses, it is likely that it will be deductible. If the IRS questions your deduction, you may need to prove the laptop is used primarily or completely for school purposes.
